TOKYO, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Oita Trinita beat Shimizu S-Pulse 2-0 to win Japan's J-League Cup on Saturday, sparking wild scenes as players and fans celebrated the club's first major trophy.
Forward Daiki Takamatsu's powerful back-post header 23 minutes into the second half gave Oita the lead before Brazilian Ueslei's late strike settled a scrappy final.
"It's amazing," said man-of-the-match Takamatsu. "We want to celebrate this with all the fans who came all this way to support us. Let's enjoy today and then go back to work tomorrow."
Both teams were guilty of glaring misses in blustery conditions at Tokyo's National Stadium but Oita, based in Japan's southern island of Kyushu, showed far greater urgency.
Ueslei forced S-Pulse goalkeeper Kaito Yamamoto into a stunning save on the hour mark minutes before Takamatsu's goal broke the deadlock.
The Brazilian forward poked home Oita's second in the 90th minute after springing the offside trap to seal the destination of the Japanese season's first title.
S-Pulse, a force in Japan and Asia under the guidance of Englishman Steve Perryman from 1998 to 2000, were poor, rarely threatening to repeat their triumph in the 1996 J-League Cup.
Several Oita players slumped to the turf sobbing in delight at the final whistle as more than 10,000 flag-waving Trinita fans who had made the long trip from Kyushu began to party.
"The club hasn't been around long," Oita's Brazilian coach Pericles Chamusca told reporters. "This is a huge achievement for the club and it was quite emotional to be able to deliver the fans the title they came all this way for."
