SINGAPORE, June 30 (Reuters) - Gold Coast United's soccer match against the Singapore Olympic side was postponed on Tuesday after the Australian club failed to make it to the Southeast Asian city-state due to aeroplane problems.
The A-League club had been due to clash with the U23 Singapore side at the Jurong West stadium but the match the Australians' plane suffered a mechanical failure prior to departure on Monday night.
The Football Association of Singapore said in a statement the game would now take place on Wednesday at Hougang Stadium. Gold Coast are also scheduled to play Hong Kong later in the week.
Singapore hopes to use the match to give youngsters a taste of high-quality opposition as they prepare for upcoming SEA games in Laos and the Olympic qualifiers.
Gold Coast's new club skipper Jason Culina wants to use the mini tour of Southeast Asia to get to know his new team mates before they face English Premier League side Fulham at home next Wednesday.
"I've been waiting for a few months now to get into training with the boys here at United so I'm really looking forward to getting over to Singapore and getting started," the Australian international and former PSV Eindhoven midfielder said.
"For me this trip is about getting to know all the other boys in the squad and having a run. The squad has been together for a while now so I'm very keen to be with them all and join in with the group -- that's the most important thing for me at the moment," he told the club's website.
