PHNOM PENH, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Turkmenistan grabbed a late goal to beat Cambodia 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, leaving the Southeast Asian strugglers with a mountain to climb to reach the second round for the first time.

Mamedaly Karadanov slotted home from close range five minutes from time after a spirited effort by a Cambodian team ranked 178th in the world and desperate for a rare draw.

Cambodia had the best of the first half and came close to scoring three times, buoyed by a crowd of 3,000 fans at the Olympic stadium, who pounded on drums and cheered every attack.

However, the former Soviet republic fought back after the break and after long periods of pressure finally found the winner in the 85th minute.
