MEXICO CITY, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Former Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe's Monterrey side extended their winless run to seven matches with a 2-0 defeat at San Luis in the Mexican championship.
Braulio Luna put San Luis ahead with a free kick on the half hour in Saturday night's game as La Volpe, serving a two-match ban after being sent off in last week's 4-1 defeat by Tigres UANL, watched from the stands.
Angel Reyna hit the post for San Luis just before halftime and Uruguayan Victor Piriz swept home a cross from the left to increase their lead three minutes after halftime.
Monterrey dropped to fourth in Group One with 13 points from 14 games but still have an outside chance of finishing in the top two and qualifying for the quarter-finals. San Luis lead Group Three with 27 points.
Defending champions Santos Laguna's indifferent run continued with a 2-1 defeat by Atlas.
Dario Bottinelli and Edgar Pacheco scored in the second half for Atlas, while Santos had Ivan Estrada sent off for a second bookable offence. Francisco Chavez put through his own goal to give the visitors a late consolation.
Santos stayed second in Group One with 19 points and Atlas are fourth in Group Three with 18.
