BUENOS AIRES, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Racing Club scored a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Independiente and deny them a place among the leaders of Argentina's Apertura championship on Sunday.

The draw in the "Avellaneda classic", the second biggest derby in Argentine football after Boca Juniors v River Plate, gave ailing bottom-placed Racing a deserved first point after three matches.

Defender Franco Sosa struck one minute from time after Daniel Montenegro had put Independiente ahead five minutes before halftime.

Colon and Tigre are top on seven points, one more than Arsenal and Boca whose 2-1 home win over Lanus leaves them with the only perfect record, six points after two games. Independiente are fifth with five points.

Lanus took an early lead in the Bombonera through Jose Sand after a Santiago Biglieri shot came back off the post. Boca hit back with goals from Colombian Fabian Vargas in the 26th minute and substitute Cristian Chavez from a Vargas pass in the 68th. Champions River, showing shaky form, went down 2-1 at Banfield on Saturday to first-half goals by Santiago Raymonda and Nicolas Bertolo.

River, who scored a stoppage-time consolation goal through Colombian Radamel Falcao Garcia, have four points from three matches having beaten Rosario Central 2-0 at home last weekend.
