MEXICO CITY, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Former Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe has fuelled the rivalry between his Monterrey side and local rivals Tigre UNAL by accusing his opposite number of making stupid comments.
Tigres coach Manuel Lapuente upset La Volpe by publicly predicting a win for his team in Saturday's match and the gruff Argentine reacted angrily.
"Tigres are not going to make a mark with him," La Volpe told reporters. "At his age, he shouldn't be saying such stupid things," he added referring to the 64-year-old.
La Volpe criticised Tigres' performance in their 1-0 win over UAG Tecos last Saturday.
"It was a sorry sight. If that's football, I'm going to dedicate myself to baseball.
"If I had to go and watch Pumas UNAM, I would because they have dynamism and movement and many things. But if it were Tigres, I would rather go shopping."
La Volpe, who led Mexico to the second round at the last World Cup, has returned to coach Monterrey after unhappy stints with Boca Juniors and Velez Sarsfield in his homeland.
He led them to the semi-finals of the Clausura championship in the first half of the year but his team have since suffered a slump and have not won in their last five outings.
Monterrey were given extra security this week after a group of fans threw eggs at the players' cars in protest at recent results.
