BERNE, Switzerland, Oct 15 (Reuters) - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Wednesday it might consider West Ham United's appeal against an FA compensation ruling in favour of their former Premier League rivals Sheffield United.

The court said, however, that it would first have to decide if it had jurisdiction to intervene in the matter.

West Ham were told by an FA arbitration panel last month that they would have to compensate Sheffield United for their relegation to the second division (Championship) in 2007.

The ruling was based on West Ham's fielding of former striker Carlos Tevez whom the panel deemed ineligible to play under league rules regarding third party ownership of players.

CAS said it would examine the jurisdiction question after first giving both clubs the chance to file written submissions on the issue.

An FA spokesman said it was their understanding that the matter could only be assessed by CAS if both clubs chose to use the Court, an unlikely scenario in Sheffield United's case.

The court said a decision on whether it could hear the case was not expected to be made before the end of November.
