MEXICO CITY, May 15 (Reuters) - Striker Jared Borgetti scored a hat-trick to help Ricardo La Volpe's Monterrey to a shock 4-1 win over nine-man Guadalajara in the first leg of their Mexican championship quarter-final.
Guadalajara, who had the best record in the qualifying stage when they took 33 points from 17 games, took an early lead when Ramon Morales scored with a seventh-minute penalty.
But Morales turned villain in the 37th minute when he was sent off for kicking Luis Perez as the two tussled for the ball.
Monterrey, the third club to have been coached by La Volpe since he led Mexico at the 2006 World Cup, equalised one minute before halftime when Borgetti chested down Perez's pass and drilled the ball home.
Chilean striker Humberto Suazo, the championship's top scorer, put Monterrey ahead with a penalty in first-half stoppage time, taking his tally to 14.
Borgetti, who has scored a record 43 goals for Mexico, was on target again in the 69th and 73rd minutes while Guadalajara also had Patricio Araujo sent off 15 minutes from time for a bad tackle on Felipe Baloy.
Brazilian Itamar Batista scored in the 86th minute to give Chiapas a 1-0 win over Cruz Azul in Wednesday's other tie. The visitors had Joaquin Beltran sent off for a foul on Batista.
