KHARTOUM, Aug 20 (Reuters) - African champions Egypt were handed an embarrassing 4-0 defeat by Sudan in a World Cup warm-up match on Wednesday.

It was Egypt's first defeat by their southern neighbours in 33 years and added to the pressure before a World Cup qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa on Sept. 7.

Mahmoud Fathallah's own goal gave hosts Sudan the halftime lead before they added three goals in the last 10 minutes.

A slip by goalkeeper Mohamed Abdelmoncef handed Mudathir Tahir an easy tap-in in the 81st minute before a weak shot from Ahmed Adel slipped past the goalkeeper for the third in the 88th minute.

Tahir's low shot completed the rout in stoppage time at the end of the game.
