BUENOS AIRES, April 23 (Reuters) - An Argentine match postponed last month when fans rioted over the death of a fan on the way to the stadium, went ahead on Wednesday, San Lorenzo beating Velez Sarsfield 1-0.
The match should have taken place on March 16 but was called off shortly before kickoff when Velez fans rioted and attempted to invade the pitch.
The trouble started when news spread that a 21-year-old supporter was killed by unidentified gunmen, who shot at a convoy of buses taking Velez fans to the game. Nobody has yet been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Wednesday's game was settled in the 14th minute by defender Jonathan Botinelli, who scored from 12 metres after Velez goalkeeper German Montoya flapped at a corner.
The visitors had Hernan Pellerano sent off for a second bookable offence in the 79th minute.
Fourth-placed San Lorenzo, who have 21 points from 11 games, moved within three of leading pair Estudiantes and River Plate. Velez stayed fifth with 18 points.
Gimnasia-Jujuy won their first game of the championship by beating titleholders Lanus in another game which should have been played on March 16.
Second-half goals from Cesar Carranza and Javier Perez Castro broke Gimnasia's duck and extended Lanus's winless run to eight games.
Gimnasia are 17th in the 20-team table, Lanus 19th. Both have eight points.
The match in the northern city of Jujuy was postponed after police said they could not safeguard the stadium due to a dispute at the headquarters of the state government, where employees were striking over wages.
