LONDON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Newcastle United striker Michael Owen, who missed most of the last two seasons through injury, scored his first competitive club goal since December 2005 in their 2-0 League Cup second round win over Barnsley on Wednesday.

Owen struck after 57 minutes with a well-placed shot to grab his first competitive goal in a black-and-white shirt since he scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over West Ham United on Dec. 17, 2005. Two weeks later he broke his foot and subsequent injuries have restricted him to just a handful of appearances since then.

Substitute Obafemi Martins, who replaced Owen after 82 minutes, added a second against the second division side in the 86th minute as Newcastle maintained their unbeaten start to the season under new coach Sam Allardyce.

Unlike on Tuesday when three Premier League clubs crashed out of the competition to lower league opposition, all three top flight teams in action in Wednesday's three ties advanced to the third round.

Manchester City, among the early-season leaders in the Premier League, won 2-1 at second division Bristol City with Italian striker Rolando Bianchi scoring the winner after 81 minutes.

Emile Mpenza had put City ahead in the first half before Bradley Orr equalised for the Robins.

Middlesbrough beat third division Northampton Town 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium with Fabio Rochemback's 35-metre strike from a free-kick for the opening goal the highlight of the night. South Korean Dong Gook-Lee added the second.
