GLASGOW, May 17 (Reuters) - Rangers dropped two vital points in a 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday to hand rivals Celtic the initiative in the Scottish Premier League title race.

The UEFA Cup runners-up took the lead through Christian Dailly but a second half Chris Porter equaliser means they trail champions Celtic by three points with one game in hand.

Celtic top the standings on 86 points with one match left against Dundee United on Thursday. Rangers are second on 83 with an inferior goal difference of seven and travel to St Mirren on Monday before facing Aberdeen on Thursday.

Dailly capitalised on a blunder by Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith to head the opener on 29 minutes. Smith charged out to try to meet a deep ball in from Kirk Broadfoot but lost out to the defender whose header bounced into the empty net from 12 metres.

Motherwell surged back after the interval and when David Clarkson's header struck the post on 50 minutes, Rangers failed to clear and Porter eventually flicked the ball home.

Elsewhere, Kilmarnock staged a tribute to Tommy Burns before their game against Falkirk with a minute's applause for their former player and manager who died of cancer on Thursday.

Kilmarnock came back from a goal down to win 2-1 in their final match of the season thanks to goals from Morocco's Mehdi Taouil and substitute Paul Di Giacomo.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle drew 0-0 with St Mirren.
