LONDON, Sept 17 (Reuters) - England striker Emile Heskey has had an operation on his foot after breaking a metatarsal in Wigan Athletic's Premier League match with Fulham on Saturday.
In a statement on Monday, his club said on their Web site (wwww.wiganlactics.co.uk), that the injury has now been confirmed as a stress fracture.
"Emile has undergone an operation this evening (Monday) where a screw was inserted into the foot," the club said.
Heskey was given a standing ovation by both sets of fans before Saturday's game kicked off at the JJB Stadium following two outstanding performances on his return to the England team in this month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia.
Wigan's head physio Alan Tomlinson said the rehabilitation process had been carefully planned.
"Understandably, everyone wants to know when Emile will be fit again to play, but the most important thing is that he fully recovers and the foot heals properly.
"I'm delighted with how we have dealt with this as a club; Emile was on his way to hospital before the first half had even finished and has received the best care available."
Heskey was injured after just nine minutes of the match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
He is likely to be out for at least six weeks, which means he will not be fit for next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.
