LONDON, Oct 14 (Reuters) - England defender Ashley Cole has been withdrawn from the squad for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia in Moscow because of injury, the Football Association said on Sunday.

The Chelsea defender hurt his ankle during the 3-0 victory over Estonia at Wembley on Saturday and will not recover in time for the Group E match at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Coach Steve McClaren has called up Middlesbrough defender Luke Young, 28, into the squad as Cole's replacement. Young has won seven caps for England, his last coming in the 3-2 friendly win over Argentina in Geneva in 2005.

Cole's withdrawal adds to England's defensive problems with fellow Chelsea defender John Terry, who missed Saturday's win with a knee injury, also doubtful for the match against the Russians.

A win would see England book their place in next year's finals alongside group leaders Croatia, who do not play on Wednesday.
