LONDON, March 8 (Reuters) - Holders Chelsea were knocked out of the FA Cup in the quarter-finals on Saturday when they lost 1-0 at Championship (second division) side Barnsley.
Kayode Odejayi's 66th minute header clinched a victory that sparked incredible scenes at Oakwell as Barnsley fans celebrated reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1912.
The Yorkshire side beat Liverpool at Anfield in the previous round and deserved their latest upset after weathering waves of desperate Chelsea attacks in the final minutes.
"I'm over the moon, I can't believe it," Barnsley manager Simon Davey told the BBC. "We went to Anfield at put on a show but nobody thought we could do it again.
"The players were fantastic. I've never been to Wembley before and nor have many of the players. To knock out a team like Chelsea with the millions they have got...unbelievable."
Barnsley are guaranteed a trip to Wembley Stadium for the semi-finals, along with Portsmouth who had earlier stunned Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in their quarter-final.
Chelsea's season is in danger of fizzling out after they lost to lower league opponents for the first time since 1999.
"It is a big disappointment," manager Avram Grant told the club's Web site (www.chelseafc.com). "For us it was not a pitch we can play quality football on.
"These things happen. Man United lost at home to Portsmouth and we played away at a team who beat Liverpool away. I don't know, but I'm very disappointed."
Chelsea still have an outside chance of winning the Premier League title, although their best hope of silverware could be in the Champions League where they are in the last eight.
"Maybe this year the (FA) Cup is not for the big teams. We move on and look forward. We have two competitions to fight for," added Grant, who said midfielder Frank Lampard and striker Didier Drogba were missing due to injury.
Nigerian Odejayi scored Barnsley's winner when he rose high to connect with Martin Devaney's cross from the right with Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini outjumped in the process.
Chelsea forward Joe Cole had wasted a chance to put the visitors in front and captain John Terry blasted over late on as Barnsley defended like men possessed.
The final whistle provoked a good-natured pitch invasion from hundreds of home fans who have not seen anything like it since their side spent one season in the Premier League in 1997-98. By contrast, Grant trudged off looking stunned.
