Nov 22 (Reuters) - Reading manager Steve Coppell believes the FA must enrol the help of the Premier League to produce a successful national side.
In the wake of England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 Coppell told Sky Sports News: "We have got a great domestic league and it's watched throughout the world, but can we ally that with also having a great international team? I don't know whether we can.
"Without the contribution of the Premier League I don't think we can progress forward as a national team in the way that we would like and guarantee the results that we would like."
The former Manchester United and England midfielder, who supports introducing a quota system into the Premier League, dismissed his own credentials as a potential successor to Steve McClaren as England head coach.
"I am a candidate only by omission," Coppell added. "I have a contract here (at Reading). It is not an issue. End of subject."
