LONDON, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Former Wales international Chris Coleman was appointed manager of Championship (division two) club Coventry City on Tuesday, signing a three and a half year deal.

"Chris is a progressive young manager with excellent coaching credentials...I have no doubt that he will help to take this great club forward," said chairman Ray Ranson on the club Web site (www.ccfc.co.uk).

The former Fulham and Real Sociedad boss replaces Iain Dowie who was sacked by the Sky Blues on Feb. 11 due to a reported difference of opinion with Ranson.

Coleman, 37, takes over a side 20th in their division and out of the FA Cup following a heavy 5-0 defeat by West Browich Albion last weekend.
