July 31 (Reuters) - Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton was charged by the FA on Thursday with violent conduct after his assault on former Manchester City team mate Ousmane Dabo, the English game's governing body said on its website (www.thefa.com).

Barton, capped once by England, had received a four-month suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty earlier this month to assaulting Frenchman Dabo during a training session when they were both at Manchester City in May 2007.

The 25-year-old, who has until Aug. 13 to respond to the FA charge, was released from prison on Monday after serving 74 days of a six-month sentence for an attack on a teenager in Liverpool city centre last December.
