MILAN, Nov 5 (Reuters) - AS Roma's stunning 3-1 home win over Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday should herald a turnaround in the club's form, two-goal hero Mirko Vucinic said.
Roma have looked a shadow of the free-flowing side which finished second in Serie A last term and are just above the relegation zone having lost six of nine leagues games.
Champions League Group A also started badly, with a home defeat by Romania's CFR Cluj, but Roma now lie second, a point behind Chelsea with two games left.
"After a game like this we understand we are a very strong team and now we must show it in the championship," Montenegro striker Vucinic told reporters. "Things were not going well but in training we tried to improve and slowly we are succeeding."
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti employed a new 4-4-2 formation to beat Chelsea and looks likely to continue with the idea rather than revert to playing one upfront.
"The boss said to play that way and even I was surprised as it was the first time I played together like that with (Francesco) Totti," Vucinic added.
While Roma were celebrating, Serie A champions Inter Milan were again struggling, with defender Nicolas Burdisso especially to blame for the 3-3 draw at Anorthosis Famagusta in Group B.
Inter, who had drawn two of their last three league games and beat Reggina 3-2 on Saturday only with a late goal, would have reached the last 16 with a win but will now attempt to seal qualification at home to Panathinaikos on Nov. 26.
Jose Mourinho said the group leaders had been guilty of giving the Cypriots early Christmas presents but he was confident Inter would show their true colours in the knockout stages.
"You need to be strong after February," the coach said.
