LONDON, May 21 (Reuters) - Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has signed a new four-year contract with Wigan Athletic, the Premier League club said on its Web site (www.wiganlatics.premiumtv.co.uk) on Wednesday.

"He is the best goalkeeper ever to wear a Wigan shirt, he is not the best goalkeeper in England, he is the best in Europe!" Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said of the former Liverpool player.

"This new deal is a massive boost for the club and is an excellent foundation to continue building for next season," added Wigan manager Steve Bruce.

Wigan's 'Players' Player of the Year', Kirkland, has kept 20 clean sheets in 64 appearances for Wigan.
