STOCKHOLM, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Coach Lars Lagerback and his assistant Roland Andersson plan to step down at the end of Sweden's World Cup qualifying campaign unless the team manage to sneak into next year's finals in South Africa.
"I want to end the speculations... Roland and I will quit depending on result. Either after the World Cup in South Africa, after the (possible) play-offs or after the match against Albania," Swedish media quoted Lagerback as saying on Sunday.
"One day you have to stop. Changing (coaches) now is the right thing."
The Swedes, who trail second placed Portugal by a point in Group One, have a small chance of securing a play-off spot provided results in the final round of qualifying go in their favour.
Sweden host Albania in Stockholm on Wednesday while Portugal take on bottom team Malta, who have only one point after losing eight of their nine qualifiers.
Striker Henrik Larsson hinted he is unlikely to make the trip to South Africa even if the team qualified.
"Football-wise I haven't decided what next year will be like... the way things feel right now there will not be any (national team action) even if we reach the World Cup," the 38-year-old striker was reported as saying by the Swedish media.
