LISBON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Benfica missed the chance to top the Portuguese League on goal difference when they were held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Leixoes on Monday.

After five matches champions Porto, who won 2-1 at Sporting on Sunday and now have 11 points, are a point ahead of Nacional Madeira, Estrela Amadora and Leixoes after five matches.

Benfica and Sporting have nine points.

Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardozo put Benfica in front with a close range shot after 33 minutes but the unfancied northern side grabbed a deserved equaliser when midfielder Wesley headed home a corner two minutes before the final whistle.
