PARIS, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Olympique Marseille have sacked coach Albert Emon and replaced him with Belgian Eric Gerets, the French Ligue 1 club announced on Tuesday.

"Eric Gerets becomes the new Marseille coach," Marseille said on their Web site (www.om.net).

Former Belgium World Cup defender Gerets, 53, guided PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch league title in 2000 and 2001.

He also coached German clubs Kaiserslautern and VfL Wolfsburg and led Galatasaray to the Turkish championship crown in 2006 before leaving the club at the end of last season.

Marseille have made a bad start to the season and lie 16th in the 20-strong Ligue 1 with seven points from nine matches.

"The team need a fresh start. Eric Gerets is the coach we need for that. His experience and his achievements in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Turkey are assets that will help the club reach its goals," Marseille chairman Pape Diouf said.
