TRONDHEIM, Norway, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Two goals in eight second-half minutes earned Rosenborg Trondheim a surprise 2-0 win over Valencia in Champions League Group B on Wednesday.

Striker Yssouf Kone gave the Norwegians the lead when he converted a pass from Mikael Dorsin and defender Vidar Riseth sealed victory in the 61st minute when he drove the ball past keeper Santiago Canizares.

The closest Valencia, beaten finalists in 2000 and 2001, came to scoring was when winger Joaquin shot straight at keeper Lars Hirschfeld from seven metres in the 48th minute.

Rosenborg coach Knut Toerum said he tried to "trick the Spaniards" by playing a more attacking game than usual.

His tactics proved a resounding success for Toerum, who told reporters it had been "a great day at work".

Rosenborg, who started the day bottom of the group, climbed to second position with four points from three games. Valencia are third on three points.

Coach Quique Sanchez Flores said there was no way back for his Valencia side after they went 2-0 down.

"We played against a good, aggressive team who got two quick goals and from then on the game was decided," he said.

"We tried to turn the match around but couldn't manage to do it."

Valencia were without Spain striker David Villa through injury but Sanchez Flores said the team should have been capable of coping without him.

Rosenborg's victory shone all the brighter because the club have had a poor season in the Norwegian Premier League and media reports suggested Toerum's days as coach might be numbered.

Group B leaders Chelsea have seven points after registering a 2-0 win over Schalke 04 at Stamford Bridge.
