BERLIN, March 9 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen have conceded defeat in the German title race after their 6-3 defeat away to VfB Stuttgart left them seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
"When you concede six goals you don't have the right to talk about the title," Werder general manager Klaus Allofs told reporters after Saturday's game.
"You can only be the champions when you know how to be clever. We're now setting our sights on qualifying for the Champions League. That's going to be hard enough."
Only the top two in Germany qualify directly for the Champions League, with the third-placed team going through to the final qualifying round.
Werder have 43 points from 23 matches and will slip to third place later on Sunday if Hamburg SV, who are behind them on 41 points, win their game in hand away to Nuremberg.
Bayer Leverkusen, in fourth place on 38 points, could also improve their Champions League chances when they play at home to Hanover 96 on Sunday. Schalke 04 (38 points from 23 games) are also still in the running.
