LYON, France, June 2 (Reuters) - Ligue 1 champions Olympique Lyon strongly suggested on Monday that coach Alain Perrin's days in charge were numbered.

"A new orientation is needed with a designation of a manager with a wider mission and a long-term contract," the club said in a statement.

"The manager's priority will be to help the club improve in the Champions League," the statement added.

Club chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has met Perrin to inform him of the club's new policy, Lyon said.

Lyon won a record seventh successive title this season and also lifted the French Cup to seal their first domestic double.

They again failed, however, to make an impact in Europe, falling to eventual winners Manchester United in the Champions League first knockout round.

Perrin, 51, previously with Olympique Marseille, Sochaux and Portsmouth in England, has been with Lyon for just over a year.
