ROME, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Juventus said on Monday that the knee injury Jorge Andrade suffered in Sunday's 2-2 draw at AS Roma was less serious than first feared but the Portugal defender was still looking at a long spell on the sidelines.

After the game Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri said Andrade's season was probably over because he had torn a knee ligament.

But the club said on their Web site (www.juventus.com) that tests showed Andrade needed surgery for a "shattered" kneecap.

The club gave no indication of how long it would take the 29-year-old to recover but said that the "situation appears less serious than previously thought".

The centre back joined Juventus from Deportivo La Coruna in the close season.
