ATHENS, Feb 19 (Reuters) - The head of Greek football's Central Referees Committee has been asked to resign after three Super League referees were threatened with suspension this week.
A spokesman for the Greek Football Association said on Thursday Giorgos Psychomanis would be replaced by former referee Giorgos Giannopoulos following a series of controversial incidents in the weekend's games.
Aris Salonika were so incensed after a 2-1 defeat by champions Olympiakos Piraeus that they posted a statement on their website (http://www.arisfc.gr) demanding the suspension of referee Nathaniel Charalabidis and his two assistants.
"The latest act of this comedy called Greek soccer has come to confirm everything that Aris has been trying to denounce in recent years," said the statement from Aris, who had a player sent off and conceded a penalty on their way to defeat.
The officials from that match are among those facing possible suspension, along with the referees in charge of the matches between OFI Crete and Asteras Tripolis and Panionios and Ergotelis.
Greece has had problems with refereeing in the past. At the start of the decade, a system called The Hut was uncovered whereby certain club officials and referees worked together to fix the results of matches.
