(Updates after medical examination)
BUCHAREST, May 30 (Reuters) - Key central defender Dorin Goian may miss Romania's opening Euro 2008 match against France on June 9 after straining a tendon in his left leg during training on Friday.
Coach Victor Piturca told Reuters Goian would definitely miss Saturday's warmup match against Montenegro and was doubtful for the France match.
Team spokesman Paul Zaharia said later a medical examination had shown the injury was less severe than originally thought and Goian would take part in the championships.
"Goain will be carefully monitored in the coming days until the France match," he said.
After playing France, Romania meet Italy in Group C on June 13 followed by the Netherlands four days later.
Romania have already lost midfielder Ovidiu Petre of Steaua Bucharest, who injured a knee playing volleyball on a Turkish beach, and second choice goalkeeper Danut Coman.
Piturca said earlier on Friday that Marius Constantin was a possible replacement for Goain but Zaharia said he was not now planning to call up the Rapid Bucharest player.
